A recent paper in collaboration with Anna M. Kaczmarek (Ghent University) on Luminescent Thermometers Based on a Covalent Organic Framework was recently published in Angewandte Chemie. The paper is highlighted in the cover.

Annual Event on Material Science, Nanotechnology and Applications Library Auditorium of FCT in Nova University of Lisbon, organized by the PROTEOMASS Scientific Society and The BIOSCOPE Research Group joined the CENIMAT, LAQV Research Centers. Carlos Brites and Luís Carlos, Phamtom-G members, were presenting the work on Luminescent Thermometry.

PAPER IN J. Mater. CHEM. A

A new paper was published in J. Mater. Chem. A reporting sustainable luminescent solar concentrators  based on organic–inorganic hybrids modified with chlorophyll illustrating the potential of this approach for the development of nature-based luminescent solar concentrators. PAPER IN SENSORS

A new paper was published in Sensors reporting an optical sensor based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to monitor the growing concentration of bacteria in a liquid medium.  The  sensor presents a performance comparable to the best values known for low-refractive index contrast. M. DEBASU WAS DISTINGUISHED WITH OUTSTANDING REVIEWER AWARD BY IOP

PRIMARY THERMOMETERS

A paper authored by PHANTOM-G's members  presenting a straightforward method to predict the temperature calibration curve of any upconverting thermometer based on two thermally coupled electronic levels was published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry C. The paper can be accessed here.

Our chapter entitled ‘Lanthanides in Luminescent Thermometry’ published in Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths, Volume 49 was the most cited chapter from Science Direct for the whole book series in 2016 (of chapters published in 2016).

CIENCIA 2016 MEETING

GFHybrids was present in the last CIENCIA meeting. This was a National Science Meeting, in Lisbon, in the 4th July. The prototype "Luminescent Nanothermometers" from GFHybrids , and two  posters were presented in the meeting organized by FCT. The website of the meeting is available here.

GROUP MEETINGS

This semester group meetings were relaunched last 24th May. The group meetings are held , in CICFANO building, room 33.1.3, Tuesday at 13:45. The objective is to promote the cooperation between the group members and improve presentation skills, in a 10 min presentation followed by a 15 min discussion. Emerging Technologies Competition final

"Dual-centre luminescent molecular thermometer based on lanthanide ions" was selected to the RSC Emerging Technologies Competition Final. The competition was organized by RCS and was held in London in June, 2016. The technology was evaluated in the materials challenge. All the details on the competition can be found here.

The special issue of Journal of Luminescence “Lanthanide spectroscopy: Making them shine brightly” is a festschrift tribute to Oscar Malta, to the career of this unique person that has given a significant contribution to the recent progresses of the Brazilian Chemistry and with a tremendous influence on the development of luminescence spectroscopy since the eighties. The volume is launched on February 2016 and is edited by Luís D. Carlos (University of Aveiro, Portugal) and Ricardo Longo (Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil).

L.D. Carlos Integrates The Brazilian Academy OF Sciences.

L. D. Carlos, researcher from CICECO and the Department of Physics (DFIs), University of Aveiro, is the latest Corresponding Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC). Elected this week to appear in the table of honor of one of the most important scientific academies of the world, L. D. Carlos, expert in the field of optical properties of materials, see well recognized the scientific merit and "relevant collaboration in the development of science in Brazil." Gulbenkian Prize for Ana Bastos

Ana Rita Bastos, PhD Student of GFHybrids was one of the awarded projects by the Gulbenkian Foundation (Portugal). The project entitled "Low-cost integrated-optics circuits for a new optical-fiber generation ", is oriented by Rute André (CICECO), Mário Lima and Paulo André (IST). The prize ceremony was held in Lisbon the past 9th March. The news in UA page can be accessed here.

A recent paper resulting from a collaboration of the researchers of CICECO,  ETH Zürich (Switzerland) and University of Rochester (New York , USA) was published last April in Physics Review Letters.

A research team of GFHybrids reported a new  white-light LED based on  single-phase white efficient and tuneable photoluminescent boehmite hybrid nanoplates lacking metal activator centers.

New Facilities

AUGUST 2014

PL laboratory in a new building

The photolumenescence laboratory is now installed on the new CICFANO building, on the second floor.  In the new laboratory it can be found  the Fluorolog spectrometers, the UV-VIS equipment, the integrating sphere among others. Also the PhD students and the PostDoc fellows moved to the new building.
